As a professional membership organisation established to promote excellence in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology through Continuing Medical Education (CME), Research, Advocacy and Policy Influence, the Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians [ZAGO] envisions a country where all women and adolescent girls attain the highest standards of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

Since inception, ZAGO has collaborated with international organizations including but not limited to the World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), John Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO), IPAS, Marie Stopes etc. On the local front, ZAGO has and continues to collaborate with other stakeholders include the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA), Midwives Association of Zambia (MAZ), Paediatrics Association of Zambia (PAZ) and the Government through the Ministries of Health, General and Higher Education. Other partners include faith-based organizations, traditional leaders, National Assembly, media houses and youth groups.

ZAGO has been running a project called, “The Zambia Prevention of Unsafe Abortions Project”. A Four-year Multi-Country Capacity Building Project’, that started in March 2019 to March 2023. The Project is supported by the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). As an advocacy-oriented project aimed at bringing about awareness of the dangers of unsafe abortions, while at the same time making efforts to addressing the problem within the confines of the law – ZAGO is therefore aware of the need to sustain the gains attained over the years.

The organisation has been working on sustainability plans since 2021 – designed to mobilise resources that would ensure continuation of programs and capacitate ZAGO to remain relevant and provide a strong voice on issues pertaining to maternal and newborn health.

The need for ZAGO to remain vibrant and active cannot be overemphasized. This is because of the critical role the organisation plays in promoting reproductive, gynaecological and newborn healthcare. The existence of ZAGO has aided in providing direction to the practice of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in the country.

Three key documents have thus been developed namely, Sustainability Plan, Strategic Plan, and Business Case Development. The three documents detail ZAGO’s current and future plans and were launched on November 26, 2022 at the Annual General Meeting [AGM] by the ZAGO President Dr Swebby Macha. The launch of the documents is a huge milestone that provide the Association with capacity to mobilise resources, both locally and internationally.

“I am happy to announce that ZAGO membership has and continues to grow, with members currently spread all over the country providing the much needed essential maternal and newborn care.  We are equal to the task to ensure preventable maternal and newborn deaths are drastically reduced by 2030,” said Dr Macha amid excitement from the general membership.
