The Zambia Self-Managed Medical Abortion (SMA) project comes from the backdrop of the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines which were released in March 2022. The guidelines, which Zambia has adopted into local context by way of revising its national Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) guidelines provide an opportunity for all countries to take necessary steps to improve access to safe abortion care. This is especially in light of the new evidence-based recommendations aimed to reduce morbidities and deaths from unsafe abortion. In addition, this project is a continuation of the previous, "The Zambia Prevention of Unsafe Abortion" - a four-year Capacity Building project, which was implemented from March 2019 to March 2023.
