In significant efforts towards enhancing access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in the country, the Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (ZAGO) in conjunction with the Ministry of Health are proud to announce the start of a comprehensive Baseline Survey. This survey is a pivotal step in understanding and addressing the current landscape of sexual and reproductive health in the country.

ZAGO, with financial support from AmplifyChange is implementing a project called “Improving access to and use of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services among Adolescents and Young People” which runs from October 2024 to October 2026. The Baseline Survey therefore aims to gather essential data on various aspects of SRH, including access to services, awareness of reproductive rights, and the prevailing attitudes and behaviours surrounding sexual health. The findings will provide crucial insights that will inform project implementation.

Zambia faces considerable challenges in SRH, including high rates of teenage pregnancies, STIs/HIV, Gender-based violence, unsafe abortions, maternal and child mortality, limited access to contraception, and a need for comprehensive sexual education. The Baseline Survey which starts on 24th February, 2025 and run for two weeks – is instrumental in identifying gaps in services and informing targeted interventions that are culturally sensitive and community-driven.

“The data you will collect will not only inform the design and implementation of this project but will contribute to evidence-based decision making that can shape policies and programs for adolescents and young people. Your role as data collectors is vital. The accuracy, integrity, and ethical conduct of your information will ensure that we have reliable data to guide interventions,” Dr Musonda Makasa said as he addressed Data Collectors during a ZAGO organized training in Kabwe. “Understanding the current SRH landscape is crucial for developing effective strategies that meet the needs of our population. This survey will empower us to make data-driven decisions that can significantly improve the health and well-being of individuals, particularly women and young people. This training is designed to equip you with necessary skills to conduct high-quality data collection while maintaining ethical considerations, confidentiality, and respect for the communities we engage with.”

The survey will be conducted in three provinces: Copperbelt, Eastern, and Lusaka, covering 30 healthcare facilities in which the project is being implemented. Results will be disseminated widely to engage all stakeholders in discussions around priority areas for improvement.
