The Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (ZAGO) recently concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Congress with remarkable success, attracting professionals from across the country and beyond. Hosted in Lusaka’s Southern Sun Ridgway Hotel from 28th February to 1st March 2025, the congress aimed to foster knowledge exchange, professional development, and collaboration among practitioners in the fields of gynaecology and obstetrics.

The congress was attended by over 100 delegates, including distinguished gynaecologists, obstetricians, and representatives from various medical bodies, student bodies, as well as local and international institutions. The diverse array of participants emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in improving women and newborn health care in Zambia

The event featured a series of scientific presentations, and panel discussions focused on current research trends, innovative techniques, and best practices in women and newborn health. Experts delivered insights and updates such as on the current landscape on obstetrics, maternal health, reproductive health, management of obstetric emergencies among many other research works. Interactive panel discussions allowed attendees to engage in hands-on learning experiences, enhancing their practical skills.

The congress hosted renowned international and regional experts who shared their knowledge and experiences. Their presentations not only inspired the audience but also helped bridge the gap between local practices and regional standards.

The congress provided an invaluable platform for networking. Professionals were able to connect, share ideas, and forge partnerships that could lead to collaborative research and initiatives aimed at addressing the pressing health challenges faced by women in Zambia.

A dedicated exhibition area, mostly by pharmaceutical companies who have for years forged hands with ZAGO – showcased the latest medical drugs, technologies, equipment, and pharmaceutical advancements pertinent to gynaecology and obstetrics. These companies presented innovative solutions that could enhance patient care and contribute to better health outcomes.

ELECTION OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

A significant highlight of the AGM was the election of the new Executive Council, an integral process that ensures effective leadership and governance within the association. The election was conducted fairly and transparently, reflecting the democratic values of ZAGO.

Candidates for the Executive Council positions were nominated by their peers, with each candidate presenting their vision and plans for advancing the society’s goals. The voting process was conducted through a secure and secret ballot system, ensuring a high level of integrity and confidentiality. The new Executive Council comprises a diverse group of leaders.

The new executive council expressed committed to addressing the key challenges faced by the profession and enhancing the quality of care for women and newborn in the country. Initiatives planned by the new leadership include increased membership, increased advocacy for women’s health issues, improved training programs for medical professionals, and enhanced collaboration with government and non-governmental organizations.

While the outgoing executive have a left an indelible footprint in terms of advancing the mission of the organisation, the new Executive Council expressed a strong commitment to maintaining ZAGO’s mission of promoting the highest standards of practice in gynaecology and obstetrics through continuous education, advocacy, and research.

Another highlight of the AGM was the recognition of the organisation members. Two distinguished members received awards: Dr Ziche Hostone Makukula received the ZAGO PRESIDENT’S LIFE-TIME ACHIEVEMENT IN OBSTETRICS/GYNAECOLOGY award, while Dr Kaindu Mwansa was the recipient for the MOST DEDICATED AND HARDWORKING OBSTETRIC/GYNAECOLOGY award.

The successful hosting of the ZAGO AGM & Scientific Congress marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve women and newborn health services in Zambia. The event, underpinned by the theme, “ADVANCING CLINICAL INNOVATION AND RESEARCH TO IMPROVE MATERNAL AND NEWBORN SURVIVAL” not only facilitated knowledge sharing and networking among healthcare professionals but also paved the way for innovative approaches and solutions to the challenges faced by gynaecologists and obstetricians. With the continuation of a robust new Executive Council at the helm, ZAGO is poised to advance its mission and positively impact the future of women and newborn health in the country. The association looks forward to continuing its vital work and hosting future events that will further enhance the professional development of its members and improve health outcomes for women and newborn across the country.
